Everybody knows that summer break is good time to participate in summer programs, but did you know that they are also great time to seek out and explore diversity? There are many benefits to attending summer programs: It’s an opportunity to make new friends, engage in enriching academic activities, learn a new city, and learn more about life on a college campus. However, participating in a summer program can also provide unique opportunities for diversity.

Ways to seek out summer program diversity:

  • Choose a summer program at HBCU or MIHE which have the advantage of serving a concentration of diverse populations.
  • Consider a summer program city rich in culture, history different from your own.
  • Choose a summer program in a city that has a concentration of diverse population new to you.
  • Consider applying to a program that is encouraging the participation of diverse populations. You will have the opportunity to learn about the career field/topic, how underrepresentation is impacting the field, and about how to be an ally for future colleagues.
  • Some summer programs include travel abroad which, of coarse, is built in exposure to diversity.
  • Additionally, some programs may offer a diverse way of thinking in their approach to the topic, such as a think tank approach to math, engineering, medical research. Also, schools that have a diverse approach to student evaluation may present a diverse platform for summer program participants.
  • Lastly, some programs are focused on providing experiences that are transformative for the students and have a positive impact on a specific population.

Below is a list of summer programs with variety of focuses. When exploring the list remember to visit the site to determine the application process and due date. Depending on when you are reading this, some deadlines have past and some deadlines have not been set yet. If you do not find the information on the website, consider calling or emailing the program directly for more information. Please contact me if you find broken links or misinformation. Also I’d love to hear about additional programs you think should be added to the list.
