How to prepare to take children to multicultural museums.
- Due to the prevalence of COVID-19 most museums in the United States are closed until further notice.
- Contact the museum before visiting to ensure they are open and operational.
- Check with each museum for policies related crowds.
- Look for age restrictions.
- Check the museum for a list of sensitive or emotionally charged material on exhibit that’s part of the tour.
How to talk to children about experiences at the multicultural museum.
- Explore your child’s feeling and understandings related to diversity, discrimination, racism, violence and equality.
- Open communication regarding material in the museum and own cultural history related to that material.
- Sample questions: Have you learned about violence, discrimination/racism, equality and diversity in school?
- Some of the images might be scary or violent. Are you okay with visiting the museum?
- Reassure your kids that you will be there with them.
- Encourage your kids to share their thoughts and feelings by discussing your own feelings, beliefs, or values,
- Ask children to give examples of the topics on display in current events.
How to talk to children about experiences at multicultural museum.
- After the visit discuss their favorite or most impactful experience.
- Explore their thoughts about the experience.
- Share suggestions for a future visit and what could be learned, explore anything that made them uncomfortable.
- Help them to feel safe while still understanding that a threat of discrimination, racism, and violence still exists in society for people.
