Party Activities
When I started planning my son’s 2nd birthday party, I had a hard time deciding on a theme. He loves music and I knew that would need to be part of the celebration. Initially, I was searching for nursery rhyme themes of which there are plenty. However, most of them were a bit too babyish (think Mother Goose) for a big 2-year-old. Then I considered more branded themes such as Yo Gabba Gabba, Daniel Tiger, Whinnie the Pooh, and Micky Mouse! But I really wanted his party to be more about him then some tv character. Thats when I found the “2 Legit 2 Quit“ birthday party theme. I knew it would be the perfect birthday party theme to give my boy a music and dance filled day.
I searched and searched for games and activities for the kids to do at the party. With children ages 2 to 6, I knew I had to be prepared to keep things moving along. Since little 2 year olds work on their own schedule, I knew if my little Cutie Q or his friends weren’t feeling the game or activity I need to be ready to move on to another one.
With that flexibility in mind, we played balloon games like Stomp, Walk n Shoot, and Sit on it. Eventually, the kids created their own games with the balloons which I did not interrupt so the parents and I could relax, and watch with amusement.
Young children need self- directed play activities, especially at big parties.
I had a music instrument station set up with DJ keyboards, drums, guitars, microphones, etc for the kids to explore on their own time. I planned to have a battle of the bands/karaoke but once we got started the kids did not need adult direction to play. So I let them.
The most successful activity that was inspired by my Pinterest search but was my own invention was the “Express Yo-self Graffiti Wall”. The kids were able to “spray paint” the wall with silly string and color and draw with chalk. I used black poster board and chalk board wrapping paper to cover the fence for a creative surface. The kids loved it. I wish it was warmer and I had more surface available for “tags” but it was fun none the less. And they went through 15 cans of silly string in about 30 minutes. If it was warmer and there was more space, they would’ve drawn a lot longer.
2 Legit 2 Quit Birthday Party Food: As seen on Pinterest
Sticking with the simple and easy theme I decided to choose food I knew my little big guy would eat: hotdogs. But I found some inspired snacks on Pinterest that were fun and decorative party foods.
Drumstick pretzels and Microphone cupcakes. The pretzels were easy to set up (just add a GIANT marshmallow to a GIANT pretzel stick and voila it’s a snack/ party favor/ toy/ conversation piece. The adults have fun trying to figure out what it’s supposed to be and why you’ve done all this EXTRA stuff. The kids have fun trying to eat it and then trying to convince their patients to give them another one.
The microphone cupcakes consist of cake in an ice cream cone and covered in silver sprinkles to look like a microphone. There were two different approaches described on Pinterest to get the cupcake in the cone. I chose to pour the batter in and bake them and the turned out fine, but a bit inconsistent. If I make them again I will try the alternate strategy listed below. Nevertheless the kids had fun holding them and eating them.
Party Music
The Dopest 2 Legit 2 Quit Birthday Party playlist! After I decide on a theme, I start preparing a playlist. We are pretty big music fans and at least three of us really enjoy dancing. Having music that is fun, themed and not just kiddie focused is important towards setting the tone of the party. I look for music that is fun for parents too!
I don’t have to start from scratch. After hosting several toddler “house parties” I have a several go to songs that make it on every playlist. I also look for more songs that may be new to my kids and go with the party theme, or in this case, 2 Legit 2 Quit. It was so much fun reminiscing and thinking of upbeat songs from that era.
Hint: I start gathering songs early so I have time to listen to them and guarantee the language and subject matter are friendly for little ears. Every household has their own threshold for popular music tolerance, so I notify the parents that we will be listening to hip hop, the radio edits/clean versions during the party so they can decide what’s best for their children.
2 Legit 2 Quit Party Favors
Last but not least is the party favors! I must confess that the party favors are my favorite part of party planning. To streamline the planning and gathering process I have started using a formula to limit the items I add to the favor bags (otherwise I go a bit overboard). The formula is similar to the strategy I use for Christmas gifts and includes: one themed toy (microphone), one item you can make/do (make music with instruments), themed candy/food (PopRocks, whistle pops), and themed book/game (balloons from party and punching balloon to replicate party games). For this 2 Legit 2 Quit birthday party I found a microphone at the Dollar Tree (its a seasonal item but here’s a similar one on amazon) and knew it was perfect. Also included was a harmonica, kazoo, (catching a trend here?) candy and a small collection of little trinkets. I used gold and silver bags and balloons for the party favors and the decoration. I added a cassette tape sticker label that said “Q’s remix: 2 Legit 2 Quit. Thank you for celebrating!”
All in all it turned out to be one of my favorite party themes! Part me of wants to use the theme again for other events like Valentines or Easter!? Maybe not, but, maybe! Don’t forget to join my email list so we can keep in touch. Thanks!
An impressive share, I just given this onto a colleague who was doing a little analysis on this. And he in fact bought me breakfast because I found it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the treat! But yeah Thnkx for spending the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love reading more on this topic. If possible, as you become expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more details? It is highly helpful for me. Big thumb up for this blog post!
